Empower Your Journey

Transform your life with concierge counseling, biofeedback, and EMDR

Meet Daniel Knox, SUDCC II, CADC I, MBA

Many of the people I work with are ambitious, high-functioning, and used to handling things on their own. At some point, substance use, compulsions, or anxiety begin to interfere with their health, relationships, or ability to keep things on track. If you’re looking for something more private, individualized and focused than 12-step groups, but aren’t suited for inpatient care, you’re likely in the right place. I intentionally maintain a small practice so that I can be directly involved and responsive to my clients. I work with individuals, couples and families, to focus on what is practical, discreet, and workable in real life.

I provide one-on-one counseling, biofeedback, and EMDR for ongoing care. Concerns vary from nicotine, cannabis and alcohol, to cocaine, opioids, methamphetamine, and prescriptions. My work doesn’t rely on medication. The approach is tailored to you, and flexible for what works day-to-day, focusing on clarity, progress, and lasting change, without disruption.

I use a range of therapy types, and prefer to work with you to decide the best approach, rather than making assumptions based on my intuition. There is no “one size fits all” strategy for positive development, and experimenting with blended styles often yields the best results.

A member of the Malibu/Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce, and the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, Venice Chamber of Commerce, and Santa Monica Rotary Club, I serve the communities of Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Venice,  Brentwood, Bel Air, and Beverly Hills.

My Background & Specialties

Substance Use Counseling & Behavioral Coaching

Comprehensive support for individuals struggling with substance use and other compulsive behaviors, with personalized treatment plans and ongoing support.

Trauma-Based, Root Cause Addiction Therapy

Specialized counseling sessions designed to address the root causes of addiction and promote long-term recovery.  Process and heal from past traumatic experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

Co-Existing Issues and Disorders

Compulsive behaviors rarely appear on their own, and it’s necessary to address the contributing stressors and issues in one’s life.  My expertise extends to issues including anxiety, autism, ADHD, body positivity, chronic relapse, depression, divorce, family conflict, gambling, hoarding, infidelity, mood disorders, parenting, relationship issues, school issues, sexual abuse, sexual addiction, sleep or insomnia, PTSD, and weight loss.

Crisis Management and Interventions

When a higher level of care is needed, I work with family and friends to help move those in need through the stages of change, bringing about recognition of the problem and understanding about what can be done, preventing enabling behaviors, and creating scenarios with a higher likelihood of successful treatment and reduced relapse.

Biofeedback / Neurofeedback

Biofeedback is an innovative therapeutic approach that allows individuals to gain awareness and control over their physiological functions, making it an invaluable tool for managing anxiety and withdrawal symptoms. By utilizing real-time data from your body’s responses, biofeedback helps you develop techniques to reduce stress and promote relaxation, enabling you to navigate the turbulent waters of anxiety with greater ease. This mind-body connection can significantly enhance your coping strategies, facilitating a smoother transition by calming the nervous system and fostering resilience.

You’re here because you’ve made it this far

Addictive tendencies, substance use, and overindulgence, are often rooted in trauma. That’s one of those scary, stigmatized words that’s easy to dismiss. “My experiences weren’t traumatic, it’s not like I had it as bad as some people”. It’s also easy to dismiss the effects. “I’m not traumatized, I’m just like this.” In its wake are depression, anxiety, and the need for “something more.”

You’re not alone. There are a lot of us out here, and we’ve grasped on to things that felt like they could help. Our personal collections of coping mechanisms can be messy, and sometimes they just don’t work anymore.

All we do is talk. And it helps. My role is in teaching skills to feel better right now, while simultaneously tackling past traumas that are affecting your current symptoms, usually without the use of medication. I help manage withdrawal effects from drugs, alcohol, and prescription medication, including antidepressants, and offer computerized biofeedback for those symptoms as well as general anxiety.

Recognition of ongoing issues and an openness to change, are how we begin the process.

So, congratulations.

You’re here because you’ve made it this far, or because you care enough about a loved one to be here on their behalf. It’s going to get better.
